Welcome to the virtual home of the Lamma Forest! |

On Earth Day, April 22 1997, a vision was born.
On that day, a realization dawned that if we planted trees in the same
spot year after year, rather than in different locations each season, lo
& behold, a forest would appear. By creating a forest, hope is given. By planting a forest, life is enriched. By setting a living example, people can see & feel the greening of the Earth & thereby empowering proactive change within themselves. A forest is more than the sum of its trees. We started by planting 2000 seedlings that Earth Day & today there are more than 20,000 trees in the forest & growing through self seeding & self propagating by bird droppings, rodents & the wind. It never ceases to amaze one how miraculous Mother Nature is & how we cannot live for very long without her blessings & free gifts that we so often take for granted. For the last 8 years or so, we have only planted local indigenous Hong Kong native trees, as this supports local flora & fauna & is part of sustainable forestry & ecological being. The trees have been donated to us by the generous & forward thinking efforts of the KFBG, Kadoorie Farm & Botanical Gardens, in Hong Kong. They have taught us the benefits of thinking ecologically by only planting native trees & have inspired us & guided us along the way. Many hundreds of volunteers, schools, organizations & companies have come to these beautiful green hills & helped us plant the trees & maintain the forest by clearing paths, pruning & cutting dead & fallen trees and a myriad of forest activities needed to maintain this living forest. The Lamma Forest is the largest group of trees on Lamma Island & quite possibly the only true forest we have on our beautiful Island. It is ours to enjoy today & to share with the wider community & future generations. Lamma-zine news stories, videos & photo galleries:
